Children Welfare Centre / Tragedy turns into a life mission
HPN is proud to partner with Children Welfare Centre that is home for over 55 children who are either orphaned or their families are too poor to care properly for them. The founder, Rupa Sunar, found her calling through personal tragedy. At the age of 19 with two children, Rupa’s husband was tragically killed in India. Widows in Nepal are often marginalized, adding to the stress of loss. After struggling for 5 years, she realized she was unable to afford to take proper care of her daughters, so she made the heart-breaking decision to place them both in orphanages. Unfortunately, Rina and Glory were placed in separate homes as there wasn’t an orphanage that had capacity to take them both. When Rupa was able, she brought her girls home, but the idea of helping impoverished families was now a guiding passion. Rupa founded CWC in 1995. Her daughter Rina Karki joined the staff in 1998.
Today, over 55 children call CWC home. Our team visited in the afternoon before the children returned from school and got a tour. Since the complex was built specifically as a children’s home, the facility consists of three flours plus a rooftop patio. Offices, a kitchen and eating/study area are on the first floor. The girls reside on the second floor and the boys on the third. Also on the third floor is their “TV room” that is tidy, but sparsely furnished. CWC maintains an extremely high standard of cleanliness, with flush toilets on all floors, something of a rarity. On the roof top patio, CWC has installed large solar panels that heat the water and cook some of their food.
One of our co-investment projects is to recruit sponsors for the children living at CWC. At this time, only 12 of the 55 have sponsors, making it extremely difficult to provide anything but the basics for these youngsters. Recently they went on a picnic -- the first in three years. HPN wants to make it possible for these children to receive an excellent education, have sufficient clothing and food, but also to have some childhood fun!
Will you sponsor one of these children? For only $35 a month ($38 if paying by credit card) you can provide a child with food, clothing, shelter, a good education in a private school and to assist in the running of the agency. You select the child you want to sponsor and you'll be provided with regular updates on his/her progress, interests and experiences. The children featured this month are posted below. Simply go to Contact Us page, let us know which child you'd like to sponsor then click Network for Good and set up a monthly charge to your credit card.
Executive Committee member,
Joanne Feldmeth, displays some of the donated items. Thanks to the generosity of the parents of children who attend the United Methodist Preschool, Glendora, we were able to bring 5 suitcases full with winter clothing for the children.
Lindsay Feldmeth is sponsoring Karishman, age 11 and in the 4th grade.
"I am happy because Rupa Mommy and Rina Sister love me so much and all the children from different places are staying here like a one famly."
